Fishing has provided mankind with a protein-rich source of food and labor, allowing for the development of an important industry, which has led to the overexploitation of most targeted fish species. The sustainable management of these natural resources requires effective control of fish landings and, therefore, an accurate calculation of fishing quotas. This work proposes a deep learning-based spatial-spectral method to classify five pelagic species of interest for the Chilean fishing industry, including the targeted Engraulis ringens, Merluccius gayi, and Strangomera bentincki and non-targeted Normanichthtys crockeri and Stromateus stellatus fish species. This proof-of-concept method is composed of two channels of a convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture that processes the Red-Green-Blue (RGB) images and the visible and near-infrared (VIS-NIR) reflectance spectra of each species. The classification results of the CNN model achieved over 94% in all performance metrics, outperforming other state-of-the-art techniques. These results support the potential use of the proposed method to automatically monitor fish landings and, therefore, ensure compliance with the established fishing quotas.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Endovascular treatment for cerebrovascular disease is accepted as a first-line option with level I evidence in patients with an early and late time of window of onset symptoms, and an additional option in patients who do not respond or with contraindications to systemic thrombolysis; nevertheless the efficacy and outcomes of some groups were not clear, one of them are patients aged 80 years and older, because they were excluded of the trials, so the evidence is controversial with significant heterogeneity, for that reason in our study, we decided to analyze the age in the patients treated in our stroke center, as a predictor of prognosis, and to provide a baseline for the establishment of personalized treatment plans. METHODS: Observational, retrospective study of patients that received endovascular treatment for cerebrovascular disease in a Colombian stroke center between 2016 and 2020, continuous and categorical variables were compared using the Student's t test and Chi-Square. To determine cut-off points in the variable against death and Rankin score variable on 90th day. RESULTS: In total, 108 patients were recruited, 35 of them were of 80 or more years, and the mean age was 72.7 years, we found age as a significant variable to predict the risk in the population over 80 years of age [RR 3.37 CI (95% 1.14-103) p = 0.029]. CONCLUSIONS: Age younger than 80 is a significant predictor for results and long-term outcomes in patients suffering from stroke, and in patients older than 80 years old a Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction score 2b-3 is a predictor of good outcomes. Further studies are needed to evaluate the relationship between intrahospital complications and long-term outcomes.

The aims of this work were to evaluate the protective role of the 250-kDa polypeptide band of Naegleria fowleri. We designed an immunization strategy in Balb/c mice which were inoculated by i.n. route with an electrocuted 250-kDa polypeptide band of N. fowleri. We observed that the 250-kDa band induced 80% of protection, whereas the coadministration with Cholera Toxin induced 100% of protection. Moreover, high levels of IgA- and IgG-specific antibodies were detected by ELISA assay. We also analysed migration molecules (α4ß1 and LFA-1) on T and B lymphocytes in nose-associated lymphoid tissue (NALT), cervical lymph nodes (CN) and nasal passages (NP) by flow cytometry. We observed that the percentage of B cells (B220/α4ß1) and T cells (CD4/α4ß1) in NP were higher in all immunized groups compared with the other compartments analysed. Finally, we detected by immunohistochemistry ICAM-1 and V-CAM-1 in the nasal cavity. The immunization with the 250-kDa polypeptide band, protect mice against N. fowleri challenge and modifies migration molecules and their ligands.

Members of the genus Naegleria are free-living amoebae that are widely distributed in water and soil environments. Moreover, Naegleria fowleri is a pathogenic amoeba species that causes a fatal disease in the central nervous system known as primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) in humans. Since most reported infections due to N. fowleri are reported in recreational waters worldwide, this study was aimed to describe the presence of these amoebic genus in Mexicali Valley irrigation channels of recreational use. A total of nine water samples were collected and processed by triplicate, in nine different sites of the Valley. After filtering and culturing the samples, plates were examined, and the observed amoebae were morphologically identified at the genus level. In addition, the pathogenicity of these amoebic isolates was checked, and molecular characterization was performed by PCR/sequencing. The results revealed the presence of Naegleria spp. in all the channels sampled. Finally, molecular identification confirmed the presence of five different species of Naegleria: N. fowleri, N. australiensis, N. gruberi, N. clarki and N. pagei. The presence of these protists, particularly N. fowleri, should be considered as a potential human health risk in the region.

BACKGROUND: We hypothesize that the integration of virtual reality (VR) with robot assisted rehabilitation could be successful if applied to children with hemiparetic CP. The combined benefits of increased attention provided by VR and the larger training stimulus afforded by adaptive robotics may increase the beneficial effects of these two approaches synergistically. This paper will describe the NJIT-RAVR system, which combines adaptive robotics with complex VR simulations for the rehabilitation of upper extremity impairments and function in children with CP and examine the feasibility of this system in the context of a two subject training study. METHODS: The NJIT-RAVR system consists of the Haptic Master, a 6 degrees of freedom, admittance controlled robot and a suite of rehabilitation simulations that provide adaptive algorithms for the Haptic Master, allowing the user to interact with rich virtual environments. Two children, a ten year old boy and a seven year old girl, both with spastic hemiplegia secondary to Cerebral Palsy were recruited from the outpatient center of a comprehensive pediatric rehabilitation facility. Subjects performed a battery of clinical testing and kinematic measurements of reaching collected by the NJIT-RAVR system. Subjects trained with the NJIT-RAVR System for one hour, 3 days a week for three weeks. The subjects played a combination of four or five simulations depending on their therapeutic goals, tolerances and preferences. Games were modified to increase difficulty in order to challenge the subjects as their performance improved. The testing battery was repeated following the training period. RESULTS: Both participants completed 9 hours of training in 3 weeks. No untoward events occurred and no adverse responses to treatment or complaints of cyber sickness were reported. One participant showed improvements in overall performance on the functional aspects of the testing battery. The second subject made improvements in upper extremity active range of motion and in kinematic measures of reaching movements. CONCLUSION: We feel that this study establishes the feasibility of integrating robotics and rich virtual environments to address functional limitations and decreased motor performance in children with mild to moderate cerebral palsy.

There has been ample debate on whether cell membranes can present macroscopic lipid domains as predicted by three-component phase diagrams obtained by fluorescence microscopy. Several groups have argued that membrane proteins and interactions with the cytoskeleton inhibit the formation of large domains. In contrast, some polarizable cells do show large regions with qualitative differences in lipid fluidity. It is important to ask more precisely, based on the current phase diagrams, under what conditions would large domains be expected to form in cells. In this work we study the thermotropic phase behavior of the platelet plasma membrane by FTIR, and compare it to a POPC/Sphingomyelin/Cholesterol model representing the outer leaflet composition. We find that this model closely reflects the platelet phase behavior. Previous work has shown that the platelet plasma membrane presents inhomogeneous distribution of DiI18:0 at 24 degrees C, but not at 37 degrees C, which suggests the formation of macroscopic lipid domains at low temperatures. We show by fluorescence microscopy, and by comparison with published phase diagrams, that the outer leaflet model system enters the macroscopic domain region only at the lower temperature. In addition, the low cholesterol content in platelets ( approximately 15 mol%), appears to be crucial for the formation of large domains during cooling.
